It is a very nicely kept traditional Dutch home with a thatched roof. The gardens are spacious and immaculately kept with a nice glass greenhouse off to one side where they grow their own vegetables. In front they own two small and very friendly goats that are gentle and entertaining for the children.
The five guest rooms are all located up a steep set of stairs and stem off of a common room set with tables. There, you’ll find maps of the area on the walls, games and tourist brochures, a small refrigerator for guest use, a sink, toaster, water cooker, coffee pot, and a cupboard full of mugs and cups for your use.
The rooms are comfortable and clean, fully stocked with linens and towels. (You will need to bring your own washcloths and bar soap.) The family room where we stayed comfortably fit 5 twin beds and had two slanted windows looking out into the field of sheep next door.
Breakfast is always a orange juice and coffee, tea, or hot cocoa along with an assortment of breads, good cheeses, delicious meats, a hard boiled egg, and then sometimes yogurt or fruit. We never did finish everything. The old breads are fed later to the goats – an activity that children will enjoy.
Located 3 minutes from the city center of Schagen with an old market square and Noah’s Ark, 15 minutes from beautiful beaches in the small town of Callantsoeg, 15 minutes from Alkmaar with great shopping and the infamous cheese market, and about 35 minutes from Amsterdam and a lot of other great tourist hot spots, this place is very central to it all, yet quiet surrounded only by the canal that runs beside it and sheep farms.
The prices flex with the season and the number of guests, but for an adult and 4 children, we paid 85E/night and that included the great breakfast, new towels every day, and light cleaning in our room. Plus we were greeted the evening we arrived and immediately offered a beverage which she prepared and brought to us and we were welcome to use her kitchenette and have tea or coffee whenever we liked. I can’t complain. Hotels cost A LOT more and offer quite a bit less without the charm.
Repeat: Yes! I would go here again! This would be a GREAT place to go with friends. She can accommodate 13 comfortably.
Directions: My GPS tried to take me off the main road into Schagen before I got to the town. From there I would around VERY narrow, canal-lined farm roads which were a bit confusing. It would be just as quick and A LOT easier to drive just into the city limits and let your GPS take you from there. You will be turning LEFT at a signal (I think the first past the city limits sign), the curving around a corner and taking another LEFT onto Tjallewallerweg. A couple minutes and you’re at the place on your right.
